The Trans Language Primer

A guide to the language of gender, sexuality,
accessibility, and acceptance.

Read the Primer to view all the terms in alphabetical order with their definition(s), part(s) of speech, examples, and links for extended context. Check out the index to see a list of terms with links directly to their entries. We also have a Flag Index for keeping track of our rainbow community. And finally, you can learn more about the project and our staff on our About page.

Discord

Discord is a great place to give us immediate feedback. Found a typo? Need clarification on a certain term? Want to know what other keywords to search for or if maybe we know of a good article around a certain term? Join us on Discord and ask!

Twitter

We just started using our Twitter @TransLangPrimer this year, bringing you Daily Shouts about the Transgender Language Primer and #TransLanguageTuesday definitions. We’re pretty responsive on there if you @ us!

Facebook

While we abhor the way Facebook treats trans people (banning folks for using chosen names, not removing anti-trans hate speech, catering to bigots around trans pride), we do maintain a small presence there. We are less active and reachable on this platform, but we do make a point to check in and at least make #TransLanguageTuesday happen.

Special Thanks

The Transgender Language Primer would not be where it is today without the help of the Trans Justice Funding Project. With their 2018 grant, we were able to get this new website and begin working towards our Spanish language translation. The TJFP provides almost-bureaucracy-free grants to trans community projects, even if we don't have 501c3 or a fiscal sponsor— a rare find in the funding world. Having run the TLP for two years out of my own pocket, I cannot speak highly enough of the work that the TJFP does in helping the rest of us get our own work done! Together we can create a better world for our community and the Trans Justice Funding Project makes that easier for all of us.
